Three Things... Jersey Knit

Have you ever tried sewing with jersey knit?

It is a knit fabric which has stretch to it and is great for leggings, t-shirts and dresses.

If you haven't sewed it before then can I suggest that you start by reading these tips. Sewing with knits is not difficult, but it is definitely a different technique and a few small tips (such as using the right needle and stitch) can make it significantly easier.

If you're looking for some inspiration what to sew with jersey knits, I've got three suggestions for you"

I love the idea of sewing a light weight jersey cardigan for myself. As an added bonus, I found a tutorial for a childrens cardigan- this would be so cute in some of our fun patterned jersey knits don't you think!?

I have not made a flashback skinny tee myself, but I have heard rave reviews from those who have! Its a really clear pattern with lots of instructions. The only note of caution to add is that this really is a skinny tee, so if in doubt, make a bigger size!

Finally, jersey knit is perfect for making girls leggings. You could easily use the same method to make pyjama bottoms if you prefer. A quick and easy project!

So what do you think? Are you brave enough to give sewing with jersey knit a try?

Three Things... Echino Women's Clothes

Some of my favourite fabrics in the shop are the Echino ones. They are a blend of cotton (45%) and Linen (55%) and have a beautiful weight to them.

These are fabrics that lend themselves to both clothes and bag making. Today I thought I'd highlight three different uses of Echino fabrics in womens clothing.

If you are a quilter or new to sewing and are a bit intimated by clothing patterns and by sewing curves, then why not start easy with this pencil skirt tutorial?

If you are not so comfortable drafting your own pattern, then we have just the answer for you too. Here is an example of the Womens A+ Skirt made up using Echino fabrics. Isn't it beautiful!?

And finally, no tutorial link here or pattern that can be bought instore, but great inspiration. Just look at the amazing dress that Miriam made using Echino Wildflower. Unfortunately we no longer have this fabric in this colourway, but we have it in black and I think that this dress serves as great inspiration for what can be done with Echino fabrics- don't you!?

Three Things... Laminated Cotton

Here at the Make Cafe, we have noticed that there are certain fabrics to which people are drawn, but we continually hear the same question:

"That's GORGEOUS... but what would you do with it???"

To help you find some inspiration, we thought we'd do a regular post called "Three Things..."

Three ideas for how to use a specific fabric types or fabric line.

This week, we have a three ideas for what to do with laminated cotton.

Laminated cotton is quilting weight fabric which has been thinly coated on the printed side with a thin layer of laminate. This makes it water resistant. It is a really versatile fabrics, suitable for all sorts of things.

How about a cute Rain Coat? Follow the link to a great tutorial for a little girls rain coat.

And finally, how about a laminated cotton messenger bag? This bag comes complete with lots of handy pockets so that your valuables don't all get lost at the bottom of your bag.
